Guess what? It’s a figure from 1990 that I really love. Have I mentioned before that 1990 is one of my favorite GI Joe years? Soon, I will have covered them all, and you won’t have to hear me sing their praises on and on. Even then however, I’ll probably still find ways to talk about them in other entries.

Python Patrol STUN (1989)

The STUN was an odd-looking vehicle, but the colors made it seem more streamlined. I wasn’t a fan of it as a kid, even though it was heavily used in the Sunbow animated series. It was meant as a fast-attack vehicle, and I can see that, but I always thought it looked more like something to be driven in a weird cross-country rally than an attack vehicle. I’ll refrain from stating the obvious about the unprotected state of everyone riding in this thing, but the open cockpit design did lend itself very well to dialogue scenes in the cartoon.

Marcus Fenix

The latest figure I picked up from NECA’s 1/18 scale Gears of War line is none other than the main hero, Marcus Fenix. Apparently he already was a recognized war hero even before the Locust War broke out, but again, just by looking at the figure you can tell he is supposed to be a tough-as-nails warrior.

If you were collecting the early 2000s GI Joe lines, there wasn’t much competition to pick up whatever you wanted. Sometimes there was a bit of a shortage of army builders, or of a variant here and there. For the most part though, it was generally clear sailing to pick up entire waves in one go. That changed with the Infantry six pack. It seemed everyone and their brother wanted to army build these guys. I can’t blame them. For the most part, it was a great set.

As an action figure collector, I’m a sucker for variants. Some folks don’t care for repainted and re-released figures, preferring to stay with the main versions of their favorites. Not me. I’ve always gone in for the recolors and remolds. I think I can trace it back in general to the Masters of the Universe toys. I know that even as a kid, I recognized the fact that many of the He-Man figures shared parts. I was also excited when new versions of the main characters showed up on shelves, complete with variations on their original outfits. My fascination continued ...
